It's never explicitly shown how slow assimilation works, although it's hinted by Fuchs when he goes through Blair's papers. According to him, it is possible. It's never depicted in the film. It is a known fact however that if you are quickly assimilated, you are no longer yourself, just an alien being that has copied every cell in your body.? Those quick, vicious attacks in the film pretty much tell it all.

I never really got how Slow Assimilation worked. Are they still human during slow assimilation, or are they alien? If your quickly assimilated, what's the? difference?

@Undeadsatyr According? to the producers, you may be correct. The storyline though, seems to make a lot more sense if Blair was slowly transforming inside the locked shed, contaminated by a piece of the Dog-thing. You see, it's hard to imagine a fully-assimilated Blair watching a computer screen intently calculating the dangers of the invader. So it must have been a transformation after the shed incident in my opinion.

I saw this film when I was six. Then I saw at age twenty...I'm? still convinced Blair was assimilated by the Dog-Thing the first night it was in the base. Side note I still have trouble watching this without getting a little freak out.

@skudman061 The Thing would replicate any aspect of your organic being. Missing teeth would = missing teeth. But since you brought it up I'd like to explain a slight discrepancy with that. All of the characters who become the thing do have perfectly imitated teeth and tissues/organs. Certain structures like the bones and teeth have mineralized tissues which can really only be obtained as you grow and? take in your vitamins and minerals. So it wouldn't really be "perfect", per se, if realistic.
