yes, seed stitch will work with this hat pattern. The decreases might get a bit tricky where you end up with two knits or two purls side by side, but? it should work out with a bit of patience.

Thank you for your help. This will be my first knitted hat if it turns out successful. The head I measured came out to be 23" inches so it is a good idea we're suppose to measure that. So 23x3 came out? to 69 so minus 8 it came out to 61. Thanks again for your help.

3 sts/inch is a pretty bulky yarn, so you? wouldn't want to go all the way up to 80. The stitches per inch will greatly effect how many you cast on. Also, depending on how you want your hat to fit - most patterns are written for a couple inches smaller than your head circumference. That way the hat stretches to fit around your head and stays in place or the 55/58. However, if you want a looser fit, I would match your cast on number to the head circumference you have - so 63/66 sts.

The yarn I'm using came out 3 stitches per inch so at 21/22"? around the head is only 63/66 stitches. Minus 8 stitches will be around 55/58 stitches. My questions are: will this be wide enough of a hat to fit a size 21/22" head? Is my math wrong? Should I cast on 80 stitches instead?

The size 7 needles should work for the 80-84 st count for the hat, just be sure that you are using a worsted weight yarn with the size 7 needles (or a yarn that knits up at 4.5-5 stitches to the inch).? However, you mentioned that the needles are 10" circulars, do they measure 10" from one needle tip to the other? Generally, for hats - 16" circulars (measuring 16" from tip to tip) works best. 10" total might be a bit to small for the circumference of the hat you'll be making.

Decreasing and casting off are two different techniques. Decreasing is when you combine two or more stitches into one, and you can keep knitting in following rows. A very common decrease is k2tog (where? you simply knit two stitches together as if they were one). Casting off removes the stitches and closes off the fabric, making it so you cannot continue to knit further unless stitches are picked up.

I really like this way of knitting on circular needles. However, DECREASING WAS A BIG PROBLEM. I was fine when I started out----8, kn to last 2 sts. then decrease last 2 sts. then 7,6, etc. When? Unfortunately, we dont have a seperate video that shows how to use double pointed needles for hats! Everything is the same, except for you divide your stitches up over three or four of your double pointed needles.Then, you knit around and follow the hat instructions the same? way. Good luck!

If you don't want a rolled brim, you can try doing it in garter stitch (knit1 row, purl 1 row in the round) or doing a simply ribbing. Both of these will prevent any rolling. The number of stitches to cast on is largely determined by what yarn you are using. For a medium weight, worsted yarn - somewhere in between 80-90 stitches should get you a circumference of 18-20" for your? hat.

Generally, hats use 16" needles or a needle circumference that is less than the circumference of the hat. That way, the needle circumference fits inside the hat circumference and your stitches won't get stretches out. What weight yarn were you using? 150 stitches seems like? it might be too many, especially if you were using dk or worsted yarn. An easy way to double check how many stitches you need is to figure out the gauge of your yarn or the stitches per inch. Take the number of stitches per inch and multiply that with the circumference in inches. Ex: if you have 5 stitches per inch, and you want an 18" circumference, you would need 90 stitches (5*18=90). Hope that helps!

wow, i have a friend of mine? that does backwards knitting, and i never even knew the technique existed until she showed me. it's a perfect technique for any piece that is made simply in stockinette stitch... BUT i have a question...can backwards knitting be done for ribbing??

I call this "ambidextrous knitting" since, if you do it alot, you become equally dextrous knitting (and purling!) with both? hands. I've been doing this since I was a child, since I taught myself to knit, and nobody told me not to knit with both hands. Note of caution: if knitting a pattern, remember that on all WS rows, K is now P, and vice versa.

I learned to knit from a book as a kid and never realized that you were supposed to turn your knitting! So I learned to knit like the book said first from your left to right then right to left. It didn't help that I am ambidexterious. Boy was I supprised when a friend watched me knit years later and told? me that I was supposed to turn it when I got to the end of a row! Suddenly all of those patterns I couldn't figure out made sense!

Hi even though im not the person from the video but i do know the answer to your question! when you would start you would make a slip knot with both as you would with one color and put it on the end peg.? you can see the end peg at 1:03 it is the one sticking out. after this is done you can start to knit then after you have completed the first or second row you would remove the slip know from the peg and let it go this will help you in the end if you have anymore questions pm me

The angles of view make it very easy to see each step so clearly vs. other videos that are created in which you can't always see what is going on due to poor angle view of video. Great Job! Thank you for this video! I just started knitting with the throwing method. It was very slow and my hands would start hurting after just a little while. Now that I'm getting the hang of this method it's so much faster and easier. At first I was freaked out by how loose my stitches were, but? maybe I was just knitting very tightly before. Thank you for teaching this method so clearly. It will come in very handy when knitting 2 colours as with Icelandic Knitting. But this video doesn't do justice to "throwers". Expert throwers don't hold their work in that fashion, nor have the yarn held so clumsily; I never let the yarn or needle go in either purl or knit. I? move only my index finger of my right hand over the needle, while holding the right-hand needle in the crook of my hand easily, giving the work a perfect tension.!

Knit witch - you are a Godsend! Your instructions on here are the best! I didn't think I was a beginner until I came to instructions that say " ...last 2 stitches ssk"! Hells'? bells I'm learning lots from you! Much appreciated! I just wish my pattern instructions would then state the new number of stitches I should have. I've been trying for hours to learn this method. I find it very awkward and? I fumble around with both needles. The knit stitch is a little easier to maneuver around than the purl stitch, which I find impossible to do. I've found that the Portuguese style of knitting is the easiest, both on the hands and the sanity.

I'm English. My Gran tought me this way, but I use index finger, not middle, to throw. Easy to knit too tight this way when you get fast. I often knit swatches that are too narrow, while row height is correct, because you leave little slack between sts when up to speed. I can manage 2 sts per second this way,? until I need a rest! This method also works in an overhanded hold of R needle, but slower. Pencil hold works for crochet too, but be careful to keep sts tall enough to achieve gauge
